The
family, the basic unit of society. The source of our strengths and
weaknesses. As the fabric of our society changes so do
families. The relative stability of the basic family that was taken for
granted in my childhood is under threat everywhere. Where
does a family begin? When we are born into a family or when two people
get married? Or when a couple have their first born? Its like asking
where does a circle begin? Any start point is as arbitrary as the
others, so lets take a look at marriage. A marital relationship isit
different from other relationships because of one important aspect. Till Death Do Us Part. Think
of relationships like a game, to use Wittgenstien's metaphor.
Which means that most relationships have some set of rules to
adhere to. And there are also conditions that make the contract null
and void (for example, "throwing in the towel" during a boxing match.
Every game has an Exit button. So how would it be if there is a game
without an Exit Button? What if, WHATEVER you do, you cannot break the
bond, the relationship of marriage? Such a game, where there is nothing
that disqualifies the players... would effectively have no rules at
all. Sure there would be preferences, and styles of play, and good game
vs bad games. But a game without disqualification is something else
indeed. Here's my family tree
